Access for all

The importance of internet access has become even greater in this time of pandemic. For students, workers, job seekers, and those most at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability to access the internet is an essential need.

The Internet Access Support Program (IASP) helps individuals and families connect to opportunities and resources that can help them get quality, high-speed internet access and manage their monthly internet bill. Whether you need help establishing new service, restoring existing internet access, paying for your monthly internet bills, or simply understanding your bill and how to get the most out of your internet service, we can help.

In addition to connecting you to outside resources, IASP also manages its own Internet Access Fund, which helps to reduce the cost of broadband access for KC residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by covering six months of internet service for qualifying households.

To qualify, you need to earn less than the program limits, shown below. Help is first come, first served, and funds are limited. Other restrictions may apply.

The Internet Access Support Program is an initiative of KC Digital Drive. KC Digital Drive is a nonprofit civic organization with a mission to make Kansas City a digital leader in order to secure our economic prosperity and improve the quality of life for all people in the region.

FAQ

How much am I able to receive to help pay for my internet bill?

The amount of funding available will vary according to your income, your internet service provider, and the current cost of your internet plan. A summary of currently available programs can be found below:

Am I eligible?

Each program has different eligibility requirements. You may be able to qualify based on your income or if you participate in federal assistance programs like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or public housing assistance. You may also be eligible if you suffered income loss as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Internet Access Support Program can help you understand your eligibility for internet assistance benefits and walk you through the process of applying.

The IASP is open to residents of Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte, and Ray counties in Missouri, and Johnson, Miami, Leavenworth, and Wyandotte counties in Kansas

Does the IASP offer its own internet service?

No. The IASP can help you identify and pay for internet service by providers serving your address, but it does not offer its own internet service to households.

Where is this money coming from?

Several internet benefit programs, including Lifeline and the Affordable Connectivity Program, are funded directly by the federal government. Some digital access initiatives, like the IASP’s Internet Access Fund, are supported by a combination of local government sponsors and donations from charities, foundations, and private philanthropic donations. Many internet service providers offer programs for low-income households to help them sign up for internet access at reduced rates.

Does it matter who my provider is?

We are able to help you no matter who your current provider is or who you may be looking to sign up with or switch to. However, some benefits may only be available under certain providers. We can work with you to help understand what your options are under your current provider and discuss whether switching your provider may help you gain access to more opportunities for assistance.

What if I have an existing or past  balance?

We may be able to help you pay down existing balances of up to $225 per household, depending on your situation.

I’ve never had internet before. Can you help me get set up?

Yes! Our staff are available to help walk you through the process of signing up for internet access for the first time and getting your service set up. We can also connect you with other program-specific resources that may be able to help you depending on the programs you qualify for.

My internet access got cut off. Can you help me get reconnected?

Yes! We can help households who have had their internet disconnected.

Can you help me purchase a laptop, tablet, or other internet devices?

Yes! We may be able to connect you with programs that offer discounts on certain internet devices, as well as organizations that offer low-cost devices.

Can multiple members of my household qualify for assistance?

No, financial assistance is only available on a household basis rather than an individual basis.

Am I eligible if I already receive Lifeline benefits?

Yes! Even if you already receive benefits through programs like Lifeline you may still be eligible for additional support.

Can this help me even if I bundle my internet service?

Yes! We can help you find ways of affording your monthly bills even if you bundle your internet service with cable, phone, or other offerings. We can even help you think about whether you may be able to save additional money by cutting the cord and taking full advantage of your internet service to watch TV shows, movies, and videos using cheaper or free streaming services.

What does the process look like?

First, we ask that you fill out this form to provide us basic details about your internet situation. Afterwards our team will reach out to you to verify your household income and get information about your needs and the current cost of your internet service. Based on this information, we will inform each household of the programs they are eligible for, and help walk you through the process of signing up.
